English
- Speed is rarely the direct cause of a crash, but it is a major contributing factor.
- Higher speeds narrow the driver's field of vision (tunnel vision), increase brain fatigue, and exponentially increase braking distances and centrifugal force in turns based on the square of the speed.
- Legal limits are upper bounds; drivers must adjust speed according to road, weather, and traffic conditions.
- Fatigue is a physiological and mental state of "unwillingness to continue the task," building up gradually and leading to severe performance drops.
- The only true remedy for fatigue is sleep (at least 7 hours before driving and resting/sleeping when symptoms appear).
- Traffic regulations (such as Regulation 168) mandate minimum rest breaks and maximum driving hours (e.g., stopping for at least 30 minutes after 4 hours of driving).
- Intersections are high-risk conflict zones involving cross-traffic and pedestrians.
- Yielding priority ("give way") means not forcing other drivers to change speed or direction.
- Heavy vehicles (trucks and buses) have a disproportionately high involvement in fatal crashes at intersections and crosswalks. Drivers must approach with heightened caution and obey the hierarchy of obedience (Police Officer $\rightarrow$ Traffic Light $\rightarrow$ Sign $\rightarrow$ Regulations).
- Attention is a limited cognitive resource.
- Distractions—such as cell phones (even with hands-free kits), eating, adjusting navigation, or dealing with passengers/children—drain attention, impair response times, and dramatically increase crash risks.
- Blind Spots and Pedestrians – Large vehicles (trucks and buses) feature extensive "blind spots," especially along the right side and directly in front, due to the elevated seating position of the driver.
- Courts hold that the existence of a blind spot does not excuse a driver from liability; rather, it imposes a heightened duty of care, requiring mirror checks, leaning forward before moving, and ensuring clear lines of sight.
